The Hair Follicle test measures compounds caught in the hair that may be related to, but not necessarily created from illicit substances.
It is then trapped from an unspecified amount of time in the hair oil. (any where from 6 months to a year and a half)
Testing facilities often mislead people by claiming that the hair test is more accurate in telling amount used within 30-90 days. Taking the measurement from how fast hair grows (approx.1/4 inch per month) Therefore 3 months = 3 quarters of an inch.
But this is misleading…
There are no studies on how long it takes for old hair oil to circulate out of the hair. And for the substances trapped in the oil to be circulated under test cutoff levels.
Hair Detox Time can be affected by Hair type, Hair Color (pigment from light to dark), Hair Texture (curly, straight), hygiene treatment (frequency of washing, temperature of water, effectiveness of shampoo, leave in conditioner, changing out brushes and towels).
A current test suggested that even brief tactile contact with hands to hair oil from money handling achieved a positive result for cocaine in the hair!
Contact with couches, pillows, towels, head rests, hair ties, brushes, combs and hats should also be considered candidates for easy contamination from ‘outside’ sources.
False positives are possible for cocaine with Novocaine, Benzocaine, Quinine and even the antibiotic Amoxicillin. -For Amphetamines and Methamphetamine; Sudafed, diet pills, allergy medications, anything containing Ephedrine, Psudoephedrine, Propylephrine, or Desoxyephedrine. These include NyQuil, Contac, Allerest, Tylenol Sinus Gel caps, Vicks inhaler – For THC; Over the counter NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs) such as Ibuprofen, Advil, Nuprin or Pamprin and perscription NSAIDs Anaprox, Tolectin, Ifenoprofen, Lodine, Motrin etc.
There are allot more drugs on the market that may cause false positives, that may have been released within the last few years. There isn’t much funding for the study of false positives set aside from the government or any industries.
